What does sustainability really mean?

What does sustainability really mean? The word has long been incorporated into our vocabulary, but is it just a buzzword? Has the term become so commonplace that for you and me it has lost its true meaning, as well as an understanding of what is actually put into the word?
Sustainability is used in an increasing number of contexts. There is no universal definition of the term, but it is common that the environment, economy and social development are seen in connection and must be taken care of for something to be sustainable.
If we google "what does sustainability mean" we get this description: Sustainability is a term used to characterize economic, social, institutional and environmental aspects of human societies.
The term originates from the Brundtland Report in 1987, where sustainable development is defined as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” We only have one planet and limited resources, and together we have a responsibility to care for it, both for those living today and for those who come after us. How can we do it best?
In the fall of 2015, UN member states adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the period up to 2030. The world's common work plan to eradicate poverty, combat inequality and halt climate change. The SDGs apply to all countries and are a roadmap for global efforts towards sustainable development.
Regarding sustainable development, which is very relevant to us as producers, we find this definition: " Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
So what does this mean for us, Smallmatters, a small Norwegian manufacturer who wants to contribute to achieving these goals? How can we ensure that what we produce satisfies today's needs without destroying future generations? What is most sustainable and how do we leave the smallest possible environmental footprint, while ensuring good and safe jobs and economic growth?
On our way to produce the most sustainable possible with the most environmentally friendly textiles, we find as many questions as answers, we will share them with you in our blog going forward, and if you have any comments, please send us an email at post@smallmatters.no
